MRI Shows Cancer Cells Thrive On Processed Sugar – ewao

The traditional method of scanning for cancer is to utilize low-dose radiation injections to identify the presence of tumors. This approach is useful because radiation is another recognized cause of cancer. But the problem is that injecting could cause adverse health effects for the body due to the potential side effects of radiation. Now, doctors can add sugar scanning as a method to find cancer tumors in people.

“The method uses an injection of typical sugar and could offer a cheap, safe alternative to existing methods for detecting tumors, which require the injection of radioactive fabric,” says Dr. Simon Walker-Samuel, the lead researcher behind the study from the UCL Center for Advanced Biomedical Imaging (CABI).

The study’s senior author said that the amount of sugar in “half a standard sized chocolate bar” is enough to identify the presence of tumors using the glucoCEST method. This conclusion is excellent, as it implies that even low quantities of sugar in the body gain the potential to aid cancer proliferation.

UCL was not the first to conduct a study and connect sugar with cancer development. Dr. Robert H. Lustig, M.D. and Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), states that sugar consumption causes the majority of chronic diseases we see nowadays. The primary type of sugars that can aid develop cancer is sweetened and processed foods, white sugar and flour, and, of course, quick food.
