75 Percent of America’s Water Contains a Toxic Chemical that Erin Brockovich Fought Against 25 Years Ago – ewao

The same carcinogen that made Erin Brockovich illustrious, has been found in the drinking water of more than 200 million Americans. In a report released by the Environmental Working Group, it has been detailed that chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium, a highly toxic chemical, is in 75 percent of the municipal water that Americans are drinking – and at levels which are 500 times those known to cause a health hazard.

Hexavalent chromium is one of the most toxic chemicals in the contemporary world. In the film named after Brockovich’s fight to expose the industries (Pacific Gas and Electric) putting these chemicals in our water supply, she famously stated, “We had that water brought in ‘specially for you folks. Came from a well in Hinkley,” as she surreptitiously places the glass in front of PG and E executives.

This is the same chemical that caused residents of this town to develop multiple forms of cancer. The company used it because it was one of the cheapest forms of preventing rust, even though it was known to be harmful to human health.

Yet, more than 25 years later, this toxic substance is found in the drinking water of bar not a bit 50 states. Who runs the indicate? As said in a Erin Brokovich, “a 28-billion dollar corporation.” But that’s just one of the behemoths we’re up against.

Why is this chemical still being used by the oil and gas industry despite its chemical health hazards and degradation of the environment? Because its cheap and regulations surrounding its clean up are immensely lax. This is the likely reason that EWG has found the stuff in nearly every city’s water supply. Hexavalent chromium seeps into the groundwater, where it then filters through to aquifers and other water supplies that people rely upon for their water.

What’s even more shocking is that levels of this contaminant are allowed at levels which are 500 times those which bear been shown to cause cancer.

But don’t let the US EPA’s website confuse you. It states,

The most common forms of chromium that occur in natural waters in the environment are:

  • Trivalent chromium (chromium-3)
  • Hexavalent chromium (chromium-6)

Chromium-3 is an fundamental human dietary element. It is found in many vegetables, fruits, meats, grains, and yeast. Chromium-6 occurs naturally in the environment from the erosion of natural chromium deposits. It can also be produced by industrial processes. There are demonstrated instances of chromium being released to the environment by leakage, poor storage, or inadequate industrial waste disposal practices.”

We’re supposed to believe that cancerous breast tumors, nose bleeds, and the long list of health ailments experienced by the residents of Hinkley, California are from fruits and vegetables? And that we aren’t doomed for the same fate whether this chemical isn’t removed from our water supplies?

The EPA also states that they bear through the “The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), determined the level of contaminants in drinking water at which no adverse health effects are likely to occur. Yet, levels which are well beyond 0.1 mg/l are causing adverse health reactions.

What enact you believe the trillion-dollar oil and gas industry will enact approximately this massive “oversight”? Nothing. Until more people like Erin Brockovich with grit and tenacity stand up against them, we face this and thousands of additional carcinogenic chemicals being dumped in our water, air, and soil. This happens everywhere, not just in the U.S.

The real question is when is enough, enough?
