Comey was fired as director of the FBI on Tuesday, according to a statement from White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. President Donald Trump reportedly made the scramble based on “clear recommendations” from Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
“The FBI is one of our nation’s most cherished and respected institutions and nowadays will tag a novel beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement,” Trump said in a statement.
In a separate letter to Comey, Trump wrote: “While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgement of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.”
The White House added that the search for a novel FBI director “will launch immediately.”
